A 33-year-old woman, Soni, was shot dead by her husband, Anoop Kumar, inside the Pali police station in Uttar Pradesh on Monday. The couple had been married for 17 years, and Soni had eloped with another man from Sahajanpur on January 7, reports.
Her husband filed a police complaint the next day, alleging abduction. A police team traced Soni and brought her to the Pali station on January 11 for legal formalities. She spent the night at the station and was scheduled for a medical check-up at the district hospital.
Relatives of both Soni and Anoop were present at the police station attempting to mediate a compromise. Around 10:45 am, after having breakfast, Soni stepped out of the station’s mess when her husband entered and fired a shot from a country-made pistol, hitting her in the chest. She collapsed instantly.
Anoop attempted to flee but was quickly overpowered by police. Hardoi SP Ashok Kumar Meena called the incident a serious lapse and suspended investigating officer Vikrant Chowdhary and woman constable Sanjana Rajput for negligence.
The case is now under investigation by Additional SP (West), Martand Prakash Singh. Authorities are reviewing procedures to prevent such breaches of security within police premises.
